Applied
Mathematics 2009/2010
Applied Maths is a leaving cert subject
which can be studied at either
Higher or Ordinary level. Most of the problems of applied maths are
taken from the world of Physics. Students solve these problems using
the maths that they learn in their Mathematics class.
They use trigonometry, vectors, simultaneous and
quadfatic equations etc. in order to solve real-life problems.
This does not mean that Applied Maths is only for
students who study Physics. Not at all! Applied Maths is suitable for
all students who are reasonably good at Mathematics.
Applied Maths is particularly useful for those who
plan a career in Engineering, Architecture or Mathematics. Many Applied
Mathematicians end up with careers in Fund Management, Banking and
Business in general. They are sought after because of their problem
solving skills which they can apply to the world of money and business.
Others seek careers in science or IT, in the academic world or in
education.
Applied Maths is offered as a module in Transition
Year and thus gives each student a flavour of this wonderful,
interesting and challenging subject.
It should be noted that at third level applied maths is sometimes
called 'Maths Physics' or 'Theoretical Physics'.
