Certificate Overview
The Junior Certificate English Course aims to nurture the intellectual,
imaginative and emotional growth of each student by developing his
personal proficiency in the arts and skills of language. In the
college, we aim to provide a wide and varied language programme with a
variety of texts, materials and approaches.
Some of the aspects covered on the course include:
Media Studies Functional Writing
Reading - for pleasure and for academic analysis Essay Writing
Drama
Poetry
Transition
Year is designed to make the student aware of the world through
a broad range of media, novels and plays.
Discussions, debating, oral and written presentations are used as
assessments. This year works from Erich Maria Remarque, William
Golding, Kanye West, Patrick Kavanagh, George Orwell and Tupac Shakur
are on the course.
ENGLISH
LEAVING CERTIFICATE HIGHER LEVEL COURSE OUTLINE 2009-2011
(1) COMPREHENDING AND COMPOSING
Developing understanding and skills in the use of language. Focus on
the following:
The language of information
The language of argument
The language of persuasion
The language of narration
The aesthetic use of language
(2) SINGLE TEXT
The study of one text on its own. Focus will be on aspects as,
character development, themes, narrative patterns, language and
imagery, role of minor characters.

(3) COMPARATIVE STUDY
A comparative study of three texts. The texts will be compared on the
basis of the following:
Theme or Issue
The General Vision and Viewpoint
The Cultural Context
(4) POETRY
A selection from the poetry of eight poets (six poems by each poet)
Evan Boland, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Gerard Manley Hopkins,
Patrick Kavanagh, Adrienne Rich, William Wordsworth, William Butler
