German at
Leaving Certificate
German is studied at Honours and Ordinary level
To do the Honours course it is important to have at least D in the JC
Higher Level paper
The LC course is two years and has 3 parts
Total paper is 400 marks
Honours
aural paper is 80 marks
oral examination is 100 marks at Honours level
written paper is 220 marks
Ordinary
aural paper is 100 marks
oral examination is 80 marks
written paper is 220

Why take German in the Leaving Certificate?

There are very few male graduates with German Language skills in any
field. Graduates with German as an ancillary subject are

Business people with a basic knowledge of German are very hard to find.
and so , it is a great asset for a young person working with a
multi-national company or company dealing with Germany.

Knowledge of German increases your job opportunities with German and
foreign companies in your own country and abroad. Proficiency in German
is a real plus for a employer with international business contacts.
Tourism and hospitality industry:
Tourists from German-speaking countries travel wide and far form the
thrid biggest group of tourists to Ireland. They appreciate to be
looked after by German-speaking staff and tour guides.

German is the second most commonly used scientific language in Europe
after English. Germany is the third largest contributor to research and
development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad.
Scientists with English as a mother language and German as a second
