Junior and Leaving Cert. Music

There are 3 main activities in both the Junior and the Leaving Cert. Music Courses.
These are Listening, Composing and Performing.

In the Junior Cert. the Listening section includes the study of songs, recorded works, Irish Music and general listening skills.

Composing consists of Melody-writing, Identifying Triads and Chord-writing.

The Performing element of the course consists of the performance of 4 pieces of music on one or two instruments or voice. There is also and unseen test here, i.e., Sight-reading or Aural-memory.

If students want to progress on to Leaving Cert. Music they develop their Listening skills by studying:
 (a) Perscribed works, e.g.: - Mozart Piano Concerto no.23. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, The      Beatles, Berlioz Symphony Fantastique, etc.
 (b) Irish Music
 (c) Aural Skills In Composing they will concentrate on Melody Writing and Harmony.

In Performance they can perform solo or as a member of a group. A Higher Level Elective in any 1 of the three activity areas - Listening, Composing or Performing, allows students to gain 25% more in the area they're most interested in. There is a similar weighting at Ordinary Level.
